Patexia Releases the 2025 CAFC Intelligence Report, Analyzing Five Years of Patent Appeals Before the Federal Circuit
Santa Monica, CA (October 20, 2025): Patexia, the leading platform for IP intelligence and analytics, today announced the release of its 2025 CAFC Intelligence Report, the most comprehensive analysis to date of patent-related appeals before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (CAFC). The study examines five years of appellate activity, providing detailed insights into companies, law firms, attorneys, judges, and lateral attorney moves in the Federal Circuit landscape.
Key Findings Include:
- From January 1, 2020, through December 31, 2024, a total of 3,853 CAFC appeals were filed.
- Filings peaked in 2020 with 863 cases, dropped to 665 in 2021, and rebounded to 808 in 2022, before stabilizing through 2024 with 714 cases.
- 62.19% of all appeals originated from the PTAB, followed by 35.38% from district courts and 2.44% from the ITC.
- The appellate activity involved 2,827 unique companies, comprising 1,741 appellants and 1,848 appellees, illustrating a nearly balanced representation across both sides.
- 1,035 law firms and 5,263 attorneys represented the parties across these appeals.
- The analysis includes 20 judges, with caseloads ranging from 8 to 560 cases, and provides judge-specific performance and decision tendencies.
- 51 attorneys changed firm, a trend that reflects ongoing shifts in the composition of appellate teams.
The 2025 CAFC Intelligence Report is delivered as a comprehensive PDF, providing in-depth analysis, detailed charts, and insights across five years of appellate activity. Accompanying the report is an Excel file, built using Patexia’s proprietary ranking methodology, which allows readers to explore full rankings, performance metrics, and case-level data for companies, law firms, attorneys, and judges. Together, the PDF and Excel tools give readers both high-level insights and granular data to benchmark performance, assess trends, and inform strategic decisions in CAFC appellate practice.
“This report brings clarity to one of the most influential but least understood areas of IP litigation,” said Pedram Sameni, CEO of Patexia. “By combining advanced analytics with verified court data, we’ve created a tool that helps companies, firms, and attorneys understand their standing, identify opportunities, and make informed strategic decisions in appellate practice.”
The report is available now at CAFC Intelligence 2025. Existing Patexia Concierge Members receive access as part of their annual membership, while individual copies are available for purchase.
